I have become my Grandmother

My Grandma Holst had a pair of glasses that she had to wear for reading. One thing I remember about her is that she was always misplacing the glasses. I remember many times being asked to look for Grandma's glasses. We would always find them, sometimes on top of her head.
Yesterday, I took a step towards becoming that Grandmother. I have been wearing glasses since 5th grade and contacts since I was a sophomore in college. Now, you need to understand that I swore I was never going back to glasses because I hated wearing them. Contacts were so much better. For the past few years, I have had trouble with reading small print. About 2 years ago my eye doctor broke the news that I needed bifocals. Argggg. At least I could get them in contacts so I wouldn't have to go back to glasses yet. The past several months it has been getting harder for me to read small print with my contacts in. I actually discovered that I could read better when I took out my contacts. I mentioned this at my last checkup a little over a month ago. I was told that it shouldn't be too hard to correct the problem, just a stronger bifocal strength for close up reading. The new contacts allowed me to read just fine close up and I loved it, until I was driving or needed to see far away, now that was hard for me to do. I had to be almost on top of a sign before I could read it. Not good if you are driving somewhere totally unfamiliar. So it was suggested that I get reading glasses and go back to my old prescription contacts. So now, I can see things in the distance, and if I put on my reading glasses I can also read stuff close up and small print. I am going to beat my Grandma at her own game however. I am planning on purchasing 6-7 pair of reading glasses and placing them in strategic places. 1. My classroom, 2. My purse, 3. My car, 4. My night stand, 5. With my computer and where ever else I discover that I might need a pair. Any one with suggestions

First High School Layout

Last night I created my first high school page. Still having a hard time believing that my baby is almost done with her freshman year of high school. Any way, I love how this layout turned out. Sarah not only was the manager for the varsity football team, but she was also a freshman football cheerleader. To make the initials on the bottom of the page, I use large brads, cover with card stock, used a rub-on letter then covered the entire area with liquid accents. This is the first time I have used the liquid accents, but love the effect that they have on the embellishment. Not sure but I might try printing a very small scanned version of her numerals and varsity letter to attach to the page yet.

Week 8

8. What is one moment of Faith for you?
After thinking about this one for a couple of weeks, I would have to say the day after my dad died. I was sitting in a chair at my mom’s house. My husband had gone with my brother to buy a tie (he forgot to pack one) and my Mom and little sister were sleeping. All of the sudden as clear as day, I heard the following words. “Willy, come with me, your son is coming home and we are going to meet him.” Willy was my grandfather. I don’t know that I will ever forget that moment.

All about you in 52 continued

I just realized that I have not been posting my entries for All About You for several weeks. I am going to do a multiple post here.
4. 7 decisions that changed the course of your life
a. To choose Love over a grad assistant and master’s degree.
b. Walking away from my job as a preschool teacher and heading back to the high school level where I belong
c. To become a creative memories consultant, sight unseen
d. Choosing to major in English education instead of Science. Way too much math in Science.
e. Deciding to attend University of Northern Iowa and pursue a degree in Education

5. Whose Life Have You Influenced Outside Your Immediate Family?"
Now this is an easy question. As a teacher, I hope that I am influencing many people. I have been privileged enough to have a few former students come back and thank me for the part I played in my life. What a joy to see a former student and have them thank you for the role you played in their life. I also know that I played a part in a few other girls’ lives. A few years ago I received a letter from one of the girls that had been in the youth group at a church that I worked with. This girl would always sit in the front of the van and stay awake on the way home from an outing. She would ask me all kinds of questions, about life and adulthood. I found out a couple of years ago that she would then take the information I shared with her and share it with the girls. Many of the girls made decisions about many things based on the information that I gave to CP and she shared with the group. I also hope that I am influencing my daughters’ lives. Even though we are in the teen years, I am sure that both S and K will take to heart some of the talks we have had.

6. Who are the story keepers in your family?
My Grandpa Holst was always telling stories about the farm and when things were built or happened. I really wish we had been smart enough to record some of these stories. One of the stories that I most remember him telling is about the time when his parents, my great-grandparents, added on to the farm house. They added the part that is now the kitchen and summer kitchen along with an attic that my aunt and uncle turned into a family room when I was in junior high. Of course, according to my grandfather this addition was added because Grandpa was such a beautiful baby.
I also remember stories that my Grandma Steinhagen told. While I remember many of their stories, I would love it if they could be back with us, sharing those stories to the next generation.

7. If you could freeze one moment in time what is that moment?
I would love to be able to have our family vacation to DisneyWorld back again. It was such a nice time. My husband wasn’t yelling at the girls all of the time, we didn’t have too much fighting between the girls, and I believe it was a time when we all had fun. Usually when we take a “family” vacation, it is when Kurt has meetings, so while he spends the day in his meetings, the girls and I spend time together. Disney was a time that we all spent together.

Scrapbooking at Grace Camp

A group of us from church have been getting together on a regular basis to scrapbook. We decided that it would be fun to have an overnight crop at the church's campgrounds. We had close to 30 people join us. Everyone had a great time and we can't wait to do it again.
